Architecture firm Gensler has submitted plans to develop a new cancer research and treatment center in South London. The £1 billion project will be delivered by developers Aviva Capital Partners and Socius in partnership with the borough of Sutton — the landowner.
The center, covering over 1 million square feet, will be located on the site of the London Cancer Hub, which already houses the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS center in Sutton. The project aims to develop a world-class life sciences cluster.
It includes several buildings of up to nine stories — ranging from large laboratories for global pharmaceutical companies to incubators for biomedical startups. Space is also planned for academic research and clinical practice.
In addition to scientific and medical facilities, the project will include a nursery, a learning center, cafés and restaurants, and affordable housing for 220 key workers in the sector.
Barry Lewis, Leader of Sutton Council, commented:
“The London Cancer Hub will become a global center for oncology in the capital. This is a unique place where world-leading cancer research, discovery, and treatment are brought together.”
The plans are expected to be reviewed by the planning committee in autumn this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.
The project team also includes engineering firm Arup and planning consultant Savills.
